Excerpt from Bible Places, or the Topography of the Holy Land: A Succinct Account of All the Places, Rivers, and Mountains of the Land of Israel, Mentioned in the Bible, So Far as They Have Been Identified: Together With Their Modern Names and Historical ReferencesWhen this handbook was first compiled, twenty-five years ago, we possessed no other key to the ancient topography of Palestine than the 'Domesday Book' of Joshua, and the - sometimes inexact - accounts of Josephus. Of modern explorers, we had Robinson, Van de Velde, and Lynch, besides others, whose work was rather descriptive than topographical. The Palestine Exploration Fund had only commenced its survey in that year, and no topographical results had been published. The writer had to rely chiefly on his own personal observation. It is not easy to realize the prodigious advance in our knowledge of this subject in the subsequent quarter of a century. To take the contemporary records alone.
